    High Performance GPU Programming & Introduction to Deep Learning Event

    This two-day workshop, April 25-26, will provide an introduction on how to accelerate applications across a diverse set of domains using OpenACC and CUDA as well as demonstrating GPUs for Deep Learning with Accelerated Frameworks using Google TensorFlow. A Hands-on Lab format will be used.

    Schmitz Scholarship for Aspiring Entrepreneurs Accepting Applications

    The Shirley G. Schmitz Foundation is currently accepting applications through June 16th to support students with an entrepreneurial drive. The non-profit corporation provides scholarships and leadership development programs for aspiring entrepreneurs who are students enrolled full-time in accredited universities and community colleges within Arizona that can lead to eventually forming a business.

    Faculty Distinctions

    Optimax Research Grant Presented to Milster Lab

    Optimax is a long-standing member of the College of Optical Sciences Industrial Affiliates program as a Leadership Partner member. Optimax has also offered the College a $10,000 Optics Grant for Research for several years now. This year, six exceptional proposals were submitted by OSC professors –and the winner of the 2018 Optimax Research Grant is Dr. Tom Milster.

    OSC Students Participate in Grad Slam 2018

    Travis Sawyer, Optical Sciences Ph.D. student, took home 2nd Place Grand Prize and the People Choice Award in the Grad Slam 2018 competition for his presentation "Uncovering the Spectral Fingerprint of Disease." Additionally, Justin Hyatt presented his research under Professor Roger Angel's mentorship in the Semi-Finals round of the Grad Slam. Great job, Justin and Travis!

    Alumni Dispatches

    OSC Alumnus Named as CEO for SPIE

    The College of Optical Sciences wishes to congratulate alumnus Dr. Kent Rochford on his recent appointment as the new CEO for SPIE. Most recently, Dr. Rochford was the Associate Director for Laboratory Programs at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Dr. Rochford received his Ph.D. from OSC in 1990 under advisor OSC Professor George Stegemen, authoring his Ph.D. thesis entitled, "Linear and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Polydiacetylene Waveguides." Since completing his degree, Dr. Rochford went on to a successful and diverse career now culminating in the great honor to lead SPIE.
