UA Selected for Photonic Data Link Demonstration Program

On Aug. 9, the American Institute of Manufacturing Integrated Photonics (AIM Photonics), announced the University of Arizona as the recipient for a new Defense Department Government Directed Project for photonic integrated circuit (PIC) data links for cryongenic focal plane arrays.
Greivenkamp Elected to SPIE Presidential Chain
SPIE president Glenn Boreman announced that OSC Professor John E. Greivenkamp was elected to the SPIE presidential chain. John will serve as vice president in 2018, president-elect in 2019, and president in 2020.
RIO Recap

Nine students from around the country gathered in Tucson this summer to study optics and showcase their findings through a presentation and poster session for the 2017 Research in Optics (RiO) REU program.
CIAN IOU-NA Poster Session

The fourth year of the Integrated Optics for Undergraduate Native Americans (IOU-NA) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program has come to a close at the University of Arizona College of Optical Sciences.
Computational Skills Workshop
The BIO5 Institute, CyVerse (formerly iPlant Collaborative), and the University Libraries will present a Software Carpentry workshop on Aug. 26-27. The workshop targets graduate students, postdocs, technicians, and faculty. Undergraduate students can be admitted if space is available.
Solar Eclipse Viewing Party

The College of Optical Sciences will be teaming up with the Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium, Steward Observatory Mirror Lab, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory and the UA Department of Astronomy to put on a solar eclipse viewing party on the UA Mall on Aug. 21 from 9 a.m.-12 noon.

Eat to Support BMES
The Biomedical Engineering Society of Arizona will be holding a fundraising campaign on Monday, Aug. 28, with 50% of proceeds benefiting the society. Present the flier (or just mention that you're there to support BMES) between 4-8 p.m. at the University Blvd. Chipotle location and enjoy a great meal.
