Seeing 'Stace' Out with Much Celebration
The venerable Eustace L. Dereniak is retiring next month after more than 40 years of service at OSC. The college is accordingly planning a farewell party for him, which will take place on Friday, Sept. 12, from 2 to 5 p.m. in Meinel 307. Light food and beverages will be provided; RSVP is requested to trish@optics.arizona.edu by Sept. 5.
CIAN Steps Up for Science Saturday
The Center for Integrated Access Networks is holding its second Science Saturday next weekend, from 2 to 3 p.m. on Sept. 6 at the Wheeler Taft Abbett Sr. Library in Marana.
Last year's theme was "Moons of the Solar System." This year, volunteers will be teaching "More About Rainbows," featuring a short presentation and a variety of demos. Come join the fun!
OSC 'Light Moments': Arrival Times and End Rhymes
The latest Light Moments explore the unique traits of two emeritus professors: H. Angus Macleod's Scottish heritage and Jack D. Gaskill's love for writing verse.
Find out how Macleod's traditional welcome was thrown into disarray in "Great Scot!" Then read Gaskill's latest, greatest contribution to the body of American literature in “Two Score and Ten More."

Students in the Spotlight
Ph.D. Student Wins Design Competition
Xinda Hu is the latest winner of the Robert S. Hilbert Memorial Optical Design Competition, held each year by Industrial Affiliates program member Synopsis' Optical Solutions Group.
Hu, a Ph.D. candidate in Hong Hua's lab, used CODE V and LightTools on the project "Design of an Optical See-Through Multi-Focal-Plane Head-Mounted Display Using Freeform Optics."
Numerous OSC students have placed in the contest in the past 14 years, most recently Tzu-Yu Wu in 2013.
Alumni Dispatches
Alumnus Named to SPIE Presidential Chain
Glenn Boreman, Ph.D. 1984, has been selected as the 2015 vice president of SPIE. He joins H. Philip Stahl, Ph.D. 1985, in the organization's presidential chain and will step into the lead role in 2017.
