Falco Helps Launch the International Year of Light
Among the numerous dignitaries – including five Nobel Prize-winners, several ambassadors and the secretary-general of the United Nations – speaking at the opening ceremonies of the International Year of Light in Paris this week was OSC's own Charles M. Falco.
Falco, who serves as chair of condensed matter physics and professor of optical sciences and physics, discussed the optics and art discoveries he made with David Hockney in a session titled "Light for Humanity and Culture."
MacArthur Fellow Lecture Series to Feature Guyon
Associate professor of astronomy and optical sciences Olivier Guyon, winner of a 2012 MacArthur Fellowship, will deliver a lecture on Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m. in Room 111 in the Cesar E. Chavez Building on the UA campus, as part of the Graduate Center's MacArthur Fellows Speaker Series 2015.
Guyon's work aids in the search for exoplanets. Other presentations in the series will share expertise in insect neuroanatomy, ethnobotany, linguistics and American Indian studies, and cultural anthropology.

In Memoriam: Marvin D. Girardeau
Marvin D. Girardeau, renowned quantum physicist and research professor at the College of Optical Sciences, died on Jan. 13 in Green Valley, Arizona. He was 84.
Remembering Cathy Alexander
The college is sad to report that former employee Cathy Alexander passed away this weekend after a long battle with cancer. She was 66 years old.
Cathy worked for OSC for 26 years, joining the staff in November 1984 as an office specialist and retiring in August 2010 as information specialist coordinator and editor of the college's weekly newsletter.
Cathy's family has invited her friends to join in a celebration of her life, to be held 2-5 p.m. on Feb. 7 at 944 S. Pantano Rd.
