Alumni and Industry Partners Reception on Tuesday in San Francisco
The first event in our 50th anniversary celebrations, an alumni and industry partners reception, will take place on Feb. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the San Francisco Marquis Marriott, concurrent with the SPIE Photonics West conference. A special program begins at 6:45 p.m.
Sustainability Fellowships at National Academies
The Science and Technology for Sustainability Program at the U.S. National Academies is offering two fellowships to rising senior undergraduates interested in sustainability in the context of science and technology.
Fellows will be based in Washington, D.C., from June 16 to July 25. They will receive a stipend for living expenses, but travel expenses will not be covered. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and applications are due April 1.
Scholarship in Photonics Accepting Apps
Ascentta Inc., a New Jersey-based fiber optics company, is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a graduate student performing research in photonics. Candidates must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and applications (PDF) are due May 1.
School on Lasers to Be Held in August
The first Siegman International School on Lasers will take place Aug. 3-8 on the campus of Stanford University. Up to 100 graduate students from around the world will gather to hear lectures from leaders in the field, make contacts for future collaborations and promote research and engineering in optics.
Space is limited, so interested parties are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible; the final deadline is April 21.
Public Lecture to Commemorate 50th Anniversary
Our semicentennial festivities continue on Feb. 12 with a public lecture by the venerable Michael V. Berry, professorial research fellow and Melville Wills Professor of Physics emeritus at the University of Bristol (United Kingdom).
The presentation, "How Quantum Physics Democratized Music," will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Auditorium 308 in the Kuiper Building, directly across the Mall from the Meinel Building.

Faculty Distinctions
Barrett to Receive Honorary Doctorate from Belgian University
Regents' Professor Harrison H. Barrett will be awarded a doctor honoris causa by Ghent University (Belgium) on March 21. His colleagues in the outstanding imaging program in the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture plan to keep him busy on the spring break trip; he will also offer lectures on image science and attend a Ph.D. defense.

Alumnus-Led Workshop Begins Next Month in Marburg
The International Conference on Semiconductor Mid-Infrared Materials and Optics, co-chaired by Mauro Pereira, Ph.D. 1992, will be held in Marburg, Germany, from Feb. 26 to March 1. The workshop focuses on the application and development of semiconductor MIR emitters and detectors.
