    In Memoriam: Nicolaas Bloembergen

    Nicolaas Bloembergen Dies at 97

    University of Arizona College of Optical Sciences Professor and 1981 Nobel laureate Nicolaas (Nico) Bloembergen, passed away on the morning of Sept. 5 due to complications arising from a recent heart attack. He is survived by his wife Deli and their three children: Antonia Bloembergen, Brink Bloembergen and Juliana Bloembergen Dalton; and two grandchildren, Deliana Bloembergen and Nicolaas "Nico" Dalton.

    The Cassini spacecraft will begin its final moments of life on Sept. 15 as it bursts through Saturn's atmosphere and begins breaking apart. The OSC Dimensional Stability Lab played an integral part in Cassini's development.

    2017 OSC Scholarship Recipients

    On Friday, Sept. 8, the College hosted its annual Scholarship Awards program celebrating undergraduate and graduate students who were fortunate to receive such support for the upcoming academic year. Made possible from the generosity of donors, this year the College handed out a record 50 scholarship awards.

    Meg Tidd Receives Michael Pate Optical Sciences Memorial Scholarship

    M.S. in Optical Sciences graduate student Meg Tidd is the 2017 recipient of the Michael Pate Optical Sciences Memorial Scholarship. Meg joins fellow OSC student and 2012 recipient David Carlson (M.S., 2012 and Ph.D., 2016) in receiveing this award. Michael Pate, the namesake of the Scholarship Foundation, received his master's from the College of Optical Sciences in 2001.
