    Reading and Writing and 'Rithmetic

Students and faculty returned to the classroom last week, and the time has come to crack open those books! We hope that everyone had a wonderful summer, whether it was spent out on the beach, up in the mountains or here in the lab.

The college has planned an action-packed fall: The Colloquium lecture series has already kicked into gear, the 50th anniversary celebration continues apace and SOCk has set up some fantastic socializing opportunities. Here's to another fantastic year at OSC!

    RSVPs Requested for Dereniak Shindig

If you would like to help bid Eustace Dereniak adieu at next Friday's retirement celebration, please email by the end of the day on Sept. 5.

We'll be seeing him off after a solid 40 years of walking OSC's hallways – expect a lot of great stories from friends, colleagues and former students alike!

Sneak a Peek Behind the Scenes at the LBT

SOCk has organized a trip to Mount Graham on Sept. 27-28, and faculty, staff and students are all invited. Not only can you camp out under the stars, but you can also take a special tour of the Large Binocular Telescope, which has mirrors made and measured right here at OSC.

    Watts Happening!

    Thin Films and Thinner Doorways

Research specialist Ross Potoff made quite an impact in Charlie Falco's thin films laboratory in the 1980s. His keen eye for perfection was unparalleled – which led to a few careful solutions to unique problems.

Shacks Celebrate 50 Years in Tucson

It's no coincidence that Professor Emeritus Roland Shack and his wife, Pam, celebrate their 50th year in Tucson at the same time that OSC celebrates its own golden anniversary – it's generally accepted that the Optical Sciences Center was founded when Roland and Robert H. Noble were hired by Aden B. Meinel.

Renovated podium area of Meinel 410

Visitors to the 408/410 lecture hall will find a warmer, more modern scene; thanks to some excellent work by facilities coordinator Hector Garcia, the room has retired its dusty chalkboards for new whiteboards and seen carpet added to the podium area.
