Optical Engineer | Control Vision, Inc.

Nov. 17, 2023

Position Location:  Tucson, AZ

Job Description:

Control Vision, Inc. specializes in creating optical sensor systems for challenging environments and applications including 3D optical profilometry and metrology, optical imaging of high luminosity / high temperature processes, remote sensing, and the related mechanical design and controls for industrial, aerospace, and defense customers.

We are looking for an Optical Engineer who can support the development and production phases of optical sensor system programs. Typical assignments include optical analysis such as radiometry and sensor performance modeling, prototype development with optical component suppliers, sensor testing, and troubleshooting of EO/IR systems. With supervision and mentoring from a Senior Optical Engineer, the candidate will support multiple projects working closely with a multidisciplinary Engineering team, including Electrical, Software, Mechanical, and Optical Engineering. You will engage in challenging and varied work, brainstorming innovative concepts, developing and designing new products, integrating and testing prototypes, and supporting our customers. This is an opportunity for you to bring your ideas to life in a small intimate team, developing state-of-the-art technology.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work as part of an optics team to design, analyze, develop, and test optical imaging systems by applying principles in optics, physics, mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, and image processing techniques
  • Perform tolerance analysis and make tolerance recommendations to meet system performance and cost requirements
  • Plan, assemble, integrate, and perform tests to evaluate system performance in laboratory and industrial environments
  • Conduct analysis and data reduction of test results
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by continually educating oneself in technical areas necessary for completing current and anticipated projects
  • Work both independently and as a team to complete projects
  • Limited travel is required

Required Skills:

  • BS and/or MS in Optical Sciences or Engineering or a similar field
  • Alignment and test of optical systems
  • Strong understanding of fundamental optical physics (imaging optics, non-imaging optics, Fourier optics, polarization, diffractive optics, etc.) in all optical wavebands
  • Strong presentation skills and ability to articulate a fundamental understanding of an optical system to non-optical engineers and customers
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work with small, diverse staff and the persistence to overcome skills, information, and communications gaps
  • Ability to work on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment where major projects change a few times per year and critical interrupting tasks like proposals must be executed quickly.
  • Proficient in Zemax, Code V, FRED, or similar optical design/analysis software packages
  • Proficient in MatLab, Python, and Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Must be a US Citizen

Desired Skills:

  • 2-10 years of experience in optical engineering
  • Experience/interest in image processing, machine vision, computational imaging, and compressed sensing and similar, and the design-of-experiments to evaluate the performance of systems taking advantage of such techniques
  • Optical metrology, remote sensing, hyperspectral imaging, polarimetric imaging, radiometry
  • Strong report writing skills
  • Hands-on experience with machine vision systems, opto-mechanical/mechanical assemblies and alignment processes
  • Stray light analysis modeling, simulation, and mitigation
  • Understand and communicate design trade space options including system performance, cost, and the advantages and limitations of a design
