    VOTE FOR 2021 SPIE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

    Every year, SPIE Members have the opportunity to elect the leadership who will guide the direction of the Society. This year's election includes two candidates for SPIE Vice President, Jennifer Barton of the Wyant College at the University of Arizona and Kristen Maitland of Texas A&M University. Additionally, four new directors and a secretary/treasurer will be elected. The election opens June 2nd and closes July 22. SPIE Announcement of Nominees.

      ROBERT S. HILBERT MEMORIAL OPTICAL DESIGN COMPETITION 2021

      The Synopsys annual student optical design competition is here! Wyant College students are invited to enter an optical design or research project they worked on during the 2020-2021 school year. This could be a class assignment or thesis work they worked on using CODE V, LightTools, LucidShape, RSoft Photonic Device Tools, Photonic System Tools, or the PIC Design Suite. Entries are due June 15, 2021. Awards totaling $10,000 will be granted. Visit the Synopsys website to learn how you can enter your project today. 

      REMEMBERING WILLIAM R. HOUDE-WALTER

      William R. Houde-Walter, spouse to Susan Houde-Walter, CEO of LaserMaxDefense and Adjunct Professor of Optical Sciences at the Wyant College, passed away June 7, 2021. The Wyant College sends heartfelt condolences to the family. Visitation will be held on June 10, 2021 from 4:00-6:00PM at the Miller Funeral Home, 3325 S Winton Rd, Rochester, NY 14623, service to follow at 6:00PM. The family invites all to attend and share condolences online

      WYANT COLLEGE TEAM WINS TLA SOFTWARE/APP CHALLENGE

      Congratulations to a Wyant College team on winning one of five awards from the Tech Launch Arizona Software/App Challenge! Travis Sawyer, new optical sciences professor, and John Koshel, Professor and Undergraduate Associate Dean, worked with UArizona students Justina Bonaventura and Thomas Knapp, to propose the development of a software app and interface control for a new smartphone spectrometer for diagnosing and screening for melanoma.
