Public Lecture Looks Up, Out and Way Beyond with Olivier Guyon

Next Thursday, Oct. 23, OSC joint professor and recent MacArthur "genius grant" winner Olivier Guyon will help us look up and out into the universe with an engaging public talk, held at 7:30 p.m. in Auditorium 120 at UA's Manuel Pacheco Integrative Learning Center.

With "Searching for Habitable Worlds and Life in the Universe with Optics," Guyon will share the excitement and technical challenges inherent to the quest for exoplanets.

This lecture is free and open to the public, and parking is available at no cost at all surface lots in the area. Come celebrate the college's 50th anniversary by listening to one of its brightest young scholars describe work that's changing the way we look into the cosmos.

    Kidger Scholarship Open for Applications

The Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship, open to students of optical design, is now accepting applications for its 2015 award.

Previous winners from OSC include Brian Wheelwright in 2014, Tamer Elazhary in 2013 and several others in the scholarship's more than 15-year history.

Go West, Young (and Old) Optical Scientists!

Mindful of the imminent Frontiers in Optics conference and its countless associated activities, this week's Light Moments article takes us back more than 43 years to the first time that the Optical Society (OSA) brought its annual meeting to the wide-open skies of the Old Pueblo.

    Miss Your Student Photo Session?

... Or are you just tired of the same old picture up on the wall on the fourth floor?

Students who have yet to take an official OSC portrait or who would like a new one should meet in the third-floor lobby between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, for a makeup photo session. If you can't make that time, drop kwaller@optics.arizona.edu a quick note to schedule an alternative time.

Note: This session is for undergraduate and graduate students only. Faculty and staff members will have a turn soon!
