The Wyant College of Optical Sciences is pleased to announce that Dr. Brian P. Anderson has been appointed Dean of the College, effective January 5, 2026.

Dr. Anderson has served as interim dean since July 2025, guiding the college with steady leadership during a period of transition. A faculty member since 2001, he has been deeply involved in graduate education, student mentorship, and research throughout his career. As associate dean for Graduate Academic Affairs, he played a key role in strengthening and expanding the college’s graduate programs.

An internationally recognized physicist, Dr. Anderson’s research explores the behavior of Bose–Einstein condensates, the coldest systems in the universe, and has appeared in leading journals. He is also the author of Field Guide to Quantum Mechanics and has taught graduate‑level quantum mechanics for more than two decades.

Members of the search committee, students, and colleagues shared their enthusiasm for Dr. Anderson’s appointment:

Dean Iman Hakim, chair of the search committee, shared:

“I am absolutely thrilled to congratulate Brian Anderson on his appointment as Dean of the Wyant College of Optical Sciences. During the search process and throughout his service as interim dean, Brian stood out for his thoughtful leadership, collaborative spirit, and genuine commitment to advancing the college. He brings people together across disciplines, and that kind of partnership strengthens our university. The future of Optical Sciences is bright under his leadership.”

Dr. Masud Mansuripur, Professor of Optical Sciences, mentioned:

“Congratulations to my dear friend and colleague, Professor Brian Anderson, on his recent appointment as Dean of our Wyant College of Optical Sciences. What I love about Brian (aside from his superb technical knowledge) is his honesty, integrity, modesty, passion for science and education, and, above all, his commitment to the success and well-being of our students. Having known Brian for over 25 years, I have no doubt that the College could not have hoped for a better leader. Our faculty, staff, students, and alumni will surely be the beneficiaries of his grand vision and unparalleled dedication for many years to come.”

Joe Lowney (PhD ’16) reflected on Anderson’s mentorship:

“Brian cares deeply about his students and supports what matters to them. When I pivoted toward preparing for industry, he adapted my PhD structure to match. He’s always been clear that he doesn’t see advising as something that ends at graduation, but as a long-term commitment to his students. His advice has always been thoughtful, honest, and human, his door is always open, and he’s the best lecturer I’ve ever had - hands down. He made my experience at the College of Optical Sciences unforgettable and positive across the board.”

Victoria Bautista, Administrative Associate, shared:

“Brian is kind, humble, and a great listener. He approaches every situation with empathy, and I truly enjoy working with him. I look forward to the great things he will do as our new Dean.”

Dean Anderson expressed his gratitude to the community, saying:

“I am very excited for the opportunity to work with all of you to advance the mission of the Wyant College of Optical Sciences. My thanks go out to the college community for all of your support during this leadership transition.”
