Congratulations to Dr. Jim Burge, professor emeritus at the University of Arizona’s Wyant College of Optical Sciences and president of Arizona Optical Metrology, who has been named the recipient of the 2026 SPIE Chandra S. Vikram Award in Optical Metrology. The award recognizes his lifetime achievements in optical metrology, including groundbreaking innovations that enabled major astronomical telescope projects, the successful commercialization of advanced metrology technologies, and decades of mentorship and leadership within the precision optics and astronomy communities.

The SPIE Chandra S. Vikram Award in Optical Metrology recognizes outstanding contributions to the advancement of optical metrology. The honor may be awarded for a singular, high-impact achievement or innovation, or in recognition of a lifetime of influential work that has significantly shaped the field. The award includes a $2,000 honorarium.
