Job Summary:

This position is responsible for applying knowledge of engineering principles to design, develop and test all aspects of optical and electro-optical components and systems. May use computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform assignments. May be involved with activities of fabrication, operation, application, installation, and repair of optical or electro-optical products and systems. Familiar with a variety of concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on extensive experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals and complicated tasks. Can work independently to accomplish project design requirements. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Leads and directs the work of others.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

· Follow all safety rules and regulations, all work must be done thinking “Safety First”.

· Researches and prepares specifications for purchase of design components and materials

· Conducts research and design of gas and solid state lasers, masers, infrared, and other light emitting and light sensitive devices.

· Defines and oversees fabrication of test equipment, and development of methods and procedures for testing products or systems

· Directs and coordinates manufacturing, construction, installation, maintenance, support, documentation, and testing activities to ensure compliance with specifications, codes, and customer requirements

· Incorporates methods for maintenance and repair of components and designs, and develops test instrumentation and test procedures

· Designs electronic circuitry and optical components with specific characteristics to fit within specified mechanical limits and to perform according to specifications

· Inspects completed installations and observes operations, to ensure conformance to design and equipment specifications and compliance with operational and safety standards

· Uses engineering methodology and procedures to apply principles of electrical theory to design and development projects

· Researches and analyzes data such as customer design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application

· Evaluates field installations and recommends design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions

· Good communications skills

· Able to lift up to 40 pounds and 41+ pounds as a two-person lift.

· Budgets, schedules and coordinates projects

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• May directly supervise other engineering personnel

Travel:

· Travel may be required on occasion to other LWS offices.

Required Skills/Abilities:

· Advanced understanding of optics, photonics, and electromagnetic theory

· Laser systems, lidar, or active EO systems

· End to end EO system development

· Mechanical assemblies

· Electronics and FPGA/processor boards

· Software and embedded systems

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

· Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.

· Proficient Microsoft Office Suite, related software and computers.

· Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

· Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from peers, managers, and personnel from various departments.

· Ability to gather and analyze information skillfully, identifying and resolving problems in a timely manner.

· Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

 

Education and Experience:

· Bachelor’s degree in Electro-Optical Engineering and at least 9+ years of experience in a related field; or 12 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
