Remembering Professor Emeritus Dr. Arthur F. Gmitro
We are saddened by the loss of Arthur “Art” Gmitro, Professor Emeritus of Biomedical Engineering and an optical sciences alumnus who earned his Ph.D. in 1982 under the mentorship of Harrison H. Barrett. Art was also a Professor of Radiology and Imaging Sciences and held a Joint Appointment with the Wyant College of Optical Sciences. His 40+ year career in optics and medical imaging research moved the science forward in significant ways, especially in the area of medical resonance imaging. The legacy of his groundbreaking work lives on in so many students whose careers he mentored, particularly the 23 doctoral students and four post-doctoral fellows for whom he was the primary advisor. Art’s family is hosting a celebration of life on February 21, and details can be found here.
